This review is from: Columbia River Knife And Tool’s Delegate Edc 1055W Assisted Opening Razor Edge Knife (Tools & Home Improvement)

I enjoy this knife and I would classify it as a gentlemen’s folder. I own a lot of knives from the high end customs to the big name manufacturers. I don’t write many reviews, but when checking this out on Amazon I was disappointed in the low rating this knife has. Yes you have to press down on the thumb stud for the knife to deploy. But to write a book on how this is a disappointment is ridiculous. I find it far better than the cheesey “safety” that other assisted knives have. Anyone that has difficulty deploying this knife should carrry around scissors. This knife requires a slight amount of downward pressure in order to deploy, but certainly not enough to go on Amazon and complain about.

For the price, buy this knife and you won’t be disappointed.

This review is from: Columbia River Knife And Tool’s Delegate Edc 1055W Assisted Opening Razor Edge Knife (Tools & Home Improvement)

I purchased this knife while looking for something stylish to keep in my car and occasionally on my person. This knife is perfect for just that. Its very understated, but on closer examination is a great looking knife. The only comments I would have are
A. It can be a bit difficult to open the knife at first, but after a bit of use, it becomes much easier.
B. As others have said, the wood on the knife is rather thin. Granted the knife itself is not all that thick, so there is a limit to how thick the wood can be. Hasn’t stopped me from appreciating the knife, thats really the only issue though.

For the price, I am incredibly happy, would recommend anyone pick this knife up if they are looking for an understated quality knife.

Excellent after it gets broken in., October 25, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What’s this?)
This review is from: Columbia River Knife And Tool’s Delegate Edc 1055W Assisted Opening Razor Edge Knife (Tools & Home Improvement)

At first I thought the knife was really hard to open like a lot of people said. It takes a while longer to get used to than most other knives I’ve used. After a little less than a week the knife is much easier to open. The knife is also a lot more attractive looking in person than in the pictures. The wood inlays could have fit slightly better, but I’m not complaining. The blade was also razor sharp, obviously.

This knife’s clip is one of my favorites I’ve ever used. It is flush with the edge of the knife and allows you to put it really far to the side of your pocket and it feels really out of the way while it’s in there. I really liked that. Someone said the clip is really stiff, but if you’re just sliding it over your jeans it’s fine.

The only reason I can think of to not buy this knife if you’re interested in it is if you’re left handed.

Could be better, but I still love mine, July 17, 2007
By

Amazon Verified Purchase(What’s this?)

I have 4 kids and one of these for each of them. They made keeping track of what questions I had for the doc, weight changes, allowed meds, etc a lot easier. I don’t think (as a first time mom) that I would’ve known just what to write down. As I’ve gone along with other pregnancies, I’ve learned to be more detailed in my writing and now go back to past journals as reference materials. Just when did heartburn kick in? When did I get to the point when I had trouble sleeping or rolling over?

The cons, as other reviewers have noted, mainly have to do with the layout. It’s just not as easily accessible as it could be. I dealt with this by getting reusable sticky page markers and wrote the most important sections down: OB Appointments, Journal area, etc. Another beef I had was that there weren’t quite enough slots for the appointments for me. There were periods when I had more frequent visits than usual and I ended up having to write on the reverse side of the previous page. If you have a difficult pregnancy, this may be an issue. Also, they only give you a small square for each week of journaling. I had way more to write than I had space and ended up writing very tiny to squeeze it all in.

Keep a pencil with it with a book/magazine to read in a small tote bag to grab on your way to the OB’s. Just don’t keep it where small children can get to it…

All you need to get through pregnancy, January 30, 2007
By
Reviewer IV (New York, NY USA) – See all my reviews

The previous poster must be reviewing the wrong book or the planner, because this journal and organizer is AMAZING — and not a calendar.

This has a daily journal that you can fill in, and it has an entire organizer section that includes things like doctor visits and recommendations, a fill in birth plan, exercise and weight gain tracker, place to list all the people to call when you’re in labor, a place to write down things to help shopping for baby, and lots more.

I had the old version of this book for my last pregnancy and filled every inch. I just bought this new version for my current pregnancy and can’t wait to start filling in this one. A definite five-star!!

love this organizer!, June 6, 2007
By

This organizer is great if you actually use it. The best parts are the areas to write down questions for your next dr. visit, and what dr. told you at each visit. Also has areas for tracking daily movements (after 5 months), and an area to make sure you’re getting the appropriate number of servings of each food type in the food pyramid, daily. I used that dedicatedly and only gained 20 pounds!!!!WOW Also has area to record baby gifts received, thank you notes written, baby names you like etc. and it’s only about 1 inch thick. Easily fit in my purse for Dr. visits.

I will definitely get another one for my next pregnancy.

After nearly 130 years of trying, only 11 colts have swept the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness Stakes, and the Belmont Stakes to earn the Triple Crown—the grand slam of Thoroughbred racing. These 11 were more than just magnificent Thoroughbreds—they were stars, and their stories are full of the drama, passion, and courage associated with stardom. These champions’ stories are found in The Most Glorious Crown, the most entertaining and comprehensive work on the Triple Crown winners ever assembled.

I read “The Most Glorious Crown” after Barbaro won the Kentucky Derby, then didn’t have the heart to write a review until after he was back on his feet, cleaning up his hay rack, nickering at nearby mares, and scratching at his ear with his leg cast. I’m just a fan. I have no right to my affection for him, being neither owner, nor trainer, nor even hotwalker. However, it’s terribly saddening to see one of these beautiful, spirited creatures break down, especially one who had a chance to win the most glorious crown.

The eleven horses that did win the Crown exemplified the highest qualities of speed, stamina, and heart, but each of them had his own character and peculiarities. The author shares rare photographs and anecdotes with a lavish hand, bringing each of these special Thoroughbreds to life along with the people surrounding him. I was especially taken by the story of Whirlaway, Calumet’s first Triple Crown winner (who also figures prominently in the accompanying DVD).

‘Mr. Longtail’ was quite a character: “Dumb, half-witted, willful, knuckleheaded, stubborn, unmanageable–these and similar adjectives were sprinkled in the reams of copy written about him.” If it weren’t for the combined efforts of Ben Jones, his trainer, and Eddie Arcaro, his jockey, Whirlaway might never have won a race, much less the Derby, Preakness, and Belmont.

Martin Drager also includes a chapter of near misses, ending with Birdstone’s defeat of Smarty Jones in the 2004 Belmont. In his epilogue, “They Were Only Human” he includes the usual statistics on the triple crown winners and also (just to prove that there is no such thing as the ‘perfect’ horse) mentions that four of the glorious eleven were challenged to match races…and lost (Sir Barton to Man O’War, War Admiral to Sea Biscuit, Whirlaway to Alsab, and Assault to Armed.)

The History Channel DVD “Win Place or Show” that accompanies this book is a miscellany of American Thoroughbred racing, including some rare footage of Man O’War’s races, plus clips of many of our Triple Crown winners. Calumet Farm is featured, as well as Hall of Fame trainer Woody Stephens, best remembered for his 5 consecutive Belmont wins in the 1980s. The commentary by various owners and trainers, including Jimmy Jones is priceless. The DVD alone is worth the price of this book.

Be certain to buy the updated, 2005 reissue of this book in order to get the History Channel DVD.

A must for Triple Crown Fanatics, August 16, 2005
By
Mary Neville (Chicago) – See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)

If you adore the yearly triple crown thoroughbred races, you gotta get this book. I was born in a triple crown year,1948, and of course learned much more about the wonderful colt, Citation, in 1973, when the media kept saying about Secretariat, “the first triple crown winner since Citation 25 years ago”.Since I was so wowwed by that gorgeous creature Secretariat, I wanted to learn more about the great Citation. What a gem he was! Eddie Arcaro said “he was a doll to ride,” meaning he did exactly what the jockey wanted and more. Then I wanted to learn about ALL the T.C. winners, since there are only 11 of them! This isn’t a book you read like a novel, though you can; it’s more like a reference book that a fanatic has to have; plus it may be the only such book in print, if I recall. There’s even a DVD by the History Channel on the inside front cover. Need any more encouragement? If ya love or own horses, or just yearn to watch them on TV, like me, you will adore this book. The photos are wonderful – all B & W, but that doesn’t bother me one bit. I find that most color photos of horses markedly distort their color: dark browns look black, blacks may have a reddish cast, etc. Ya gotta go to the track to see the REAL color of the horse, I guess. I digress. The statistics presented are so interesting, like triple crown “near misses”. I’m so glad this book was published for the likes of me. It’s a beaut!

Must have for casual and hard-core fans alike, May 22, 2005
Amazon Verified Purchase(What’s this?)

When this book was first released in 1975, I read it cover-to-cover so many times it finally fell apart. It’s a great way for casual fans to learn about America’s Triple Crown winners;even the most hard-core of fans will enjoy all the pictures of these spectacular thoroughbred stars. The 2005 edition is updated to include Seattle Slew and Affirmed. If you already have the book without these additions, don’t bother spending the money unless you want the DVD. You can get better information on Affirmed and Slew in the Thoroughbred Legends series. But if you don’t have this book and you love horse-racing, I highly recommend it. The DVD is nice, too. I enjoyed seeing Man o’War, Whirlaway and of course, Slew.

Buy Chicago under Glass: Early Photographs from the Chicago Daily News Reviews

Read full article  | No Comments

When the Chicago Daily News closed its doors in March 1978 after over a century of publication, the city mourned the loss of an American original. The Daily News boasted the inventive, aggressive writing of such luminaries as Carl Sandburg and Ben Hecht. It was also one of the first newspapers in the country to feature black-and-white photography. In 1900, staffers from the paper’s art department began lugging bulky cameras, heavy glass plates, and explosive flash powder throughout the city. A labor strike, a boxing match, or a crime scene—it was all in a day’s work for the Daily News photographer.
These cameramen helped sell papers, but, as Mark Jacob and Richard Cahan reveal, they also made art. Chicago under Glass: Early Photographs from the Chicago Daily News is the first collection of images from the photo staff’s early years, 1901 to 1930. Jacob and Cahan, seasoned journalists themselves, have selected more than 250 images—many of which have never before been publis

Early photojournalism from a great newspaper that still resonates today., December 31, 2008

This review is from: Chicago under Glass: Early Photographs from the Chicago Daily News (Hardcover)

I predict that other readers will get as much pleasure as I did when I first viewed these wonderful photographs in this intriguing book. It seems as if the real, day-to-day history of Chicago at this time unfolds to the viewer in a most emotional way that leaves one with a sense of “being there.”

Spending time with these eloquent photos also stirred my memory of reading the late, great, and lamented Chicago Daily News, the city’s greatest newspaper in my estimation. I would get home from school and dig into the afternoon CDN with its history of great writers–Carl Sandburg, Mike Royko, Sidney J. Harris, Dave Nightingale, John Fischetti, Richard Christiansen, Henry Kogan and others. I fondly remember those afternoons reading the CDN as some of the finest moments of my youth. When I moved on to the university in Cleveland, I even took out a mail subscription to my beloved CDN. Alas, the CDN published its last issue in 1978 with the sad headline of “So long, Chicago!”

As a warm-up to viewing the book’s photos, I suggest looking very carefully at the cover photograph. Try to determine what is actually happening in this scene. You’ll find the answer in the text of the book.

I love this shirt and it’s here just in time! I want to point out that the shirt DOES have the tigers logo on the front of the shirt that lies over the left part of your chest. I was a little iffy about ordering because it didn’t have a picture of the front and I was hoping that the tigers logo was on it. I’m pleased to say that it does!

Okay, there are two groups of folks looking at this item, Steampunk costume folks and welders.

For the welders:
- Well built, inexpensive
- Both the clear and shaded glass were flat and well-attached
- The ventilation on the goggles was especially good

For the steampunk folks:
- The googles themselves are rubber-plastic, would need decoration
- Strap is decidedly modern looking
- There is (safety) text on the lenses
- Look pretty good and are cheap
